MSc Early Intervnetion in Psychosis

PURPOSE AND LEARNING GOALS

The Postgraduate Program (MSc) titled "Early Intervention in Psychosis" offered by the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) focuses on the philosophy, principles, and applications of early intervention in psychosis.

Purpose of the Program

The aim of this MSc program is to educate and train students in the early and comprehensive therapeutic management of the first psychotic episode and its prodromal manifestations.

Curriculum Highlights

During the program, students will:

  1. Study the philosophy and principles underpinning scientifically established Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) services.
  2. Learn about the symptomatology and pathophysiology of psychotic disorders.
  3. Explore intervention models focusing on immediate, proactive, and multi-dimensional support (pharmacological, psychological, and social) for patients within the psychosis spectrum, both in the community and at home.

The interventions emphasize:

  • De-stigmatizing mental illness.
  • Collaborative care, where the patient is involved in therapeutic planning.
  • Relapse prevention.
  • Active support for rapid social, functional, and professional rehabilitation.

Special attention will be given to:

  • Available medical, psychotherapeutic, and social interventions.
  • Practical training through the analysis of clinical cases and development of therapeutic plans.

Program Goals

The MSc program aims to:

  • Provide a solid theoretical foundation for the daily clinical practice of mental health professionals and for developing early intervention policies in psychosis.
  • Equip students with the skills to provide multi-faceted support to young patients (and their families) during the early stages of psychotic disorders, using appropriate scientific methodologies.
  • Offer advanced training in research methodologies within health sciences, enabling students to generate and apply new knowledge effectively.
